The term "Life Sciences" includes all of the academic disciplines
that touch on biological life, but life sciences also combines the study of
the inter-relationships among all the components of biological life – from
molecular mechanisms to the environment to human values. Scientists have
termed this "biological complexity." The overarching vision for VCU
Life Sciences is the study of biological complexity. VCU is among the few
universities that are currently underway with such a comprehensive program in
the life sciences.
The completion of the sequencing of the human genome is a hallmark
illustration that we are in the midst of an intellectual revolution in the
life sciences.
VCU Life Sciences is developing as a true, university-wide discipline that
will build upon the university’s traditional scientific strengths in the
biological sciences, basic biomedical sciences, patient care, biomedical
engineering and biotechnology.
VCU Life Sciences will be comprehensive in its involvement of all levels
of students in the study of life sciences, from freshmen to students in the
professional programs to Ph.D. candidates. It will integrate diverse
disciplines from all over the university, including the academic health
center as well as arts and humanities. It will encompass both education, in
the form of curricular changes, as well as research and scholarship.
VCU Life Sciences is planning development in the following areas:
undergraduate programs in the life sciences that will focus on
interdisciplinary and research-oriented experiences in fields such as
bioinformatics, biology, biomedical engineering, biotechnology,
environmental science and forensic science; and
new five-year master’s programs in four fields: environmental studies,
bioinformatics, biotechnology and forensic science.
expanded research opportunities for both students and faculty members.
enhanced employment opportunities for undergraduate and graduate
students.
increase student and faculty interaction with the private sector.
new faculty recruitment.
opportunities for innovative community partnerships with organizations
like the Science Museum of Virginia and the Maymont Foundation.
